Good Chinese tattoos have to at least contain the correct translations with meaningful characters in Chinese. Moreover, the writing styles have to be aesthetically pleasing so that the tattoos do not appear to be some baby’s scribbles. It would be a great plus if the hanzi is decorated by pictures (e.g. flowers).
I have come across some very nice Chinese hanzi tattoos on the internet (especially on Tumblr and Flickr) and lots of them have the ‘wow’ factor. While some of these tattoos are personal, some of them contain very common words, expressions and sentences which are also included in my Chinese tattoo books.
Wise words with flowers
This is the most beautiful Chinese tattoos I have ever seen. The five Chinese characters on the lady’s back mean that cherry blossoms in cold weathers do not exhibit their fragrances in the winter. While other flowers with nice fragrances already cannot stand the cold weather, cherry blossoms usually bloom in the winter. Therefore what they actually exhibit is determination and the ability to stand in harsh weather conditions. The Chinese characters are beautifully decorated by nice painted cherry blossoms.
Nice long sentence shows courage
This is another nice Chinese tattoo on the back. The 13 characters mean what does not kill me makes me stronger. Apart from the positive messages sent out from the tattoo, the writing style is pretty and neat. However, if we want to be 100% precise, the third character should have been omitted.
Characters with a cross
What displays on the back means ‘don’t give up’. The cross above the three characters shows the girl’s religious belief. This is a nice combination of characters with symbols which exhibits one’s belief and faith.
Nice tattoo for making wishes
The four characters inked on the lady’s arm mean ‘everything you wish will come true’. This is a common expression used for making wishes (for yourself or for other people). What I like about this tattoo is the powerful and thick strokes used for the Chinese hanzi.
Chinese wise words for taking risk
The eight character wise words on the side of the torso are used to indicate that no great enterprise can be successful without some risk being taken. The writing style is beautiful and stronger which shows one’s the determination to take risk in life.
Tattoo showing faith and belief
The five characters means ‘god’s children’. This is a tattoo which shows one’s belief and faith. The writing style is very neat and can be easily recognised.
One of the most commonly inked hanzi
This is one of the most commonly inked Chinese characters which means the ‘dragon’. In contrasts to the fiery dragons which are inked on men, this character with its calm and neat writing style is somehow better suited for girls.
Chinese and English combined
The two-character word already has its English meaning translated in the same tattoo. This is perhaps not a bad idea for short words.
Chinese character with bird and bush
In contrast to most Hanzi tattoos which are usually inked in black, this character which means ‘peace’ is inked in red. It combines very well with the bird and bush drawing.
Chinese tattoo for star sign
Getting your star signs in Chinese inked as a tattoo is very common. This Chinese word is translated as Capricorn. The writing style is very nice indeed.
Hanzi and drawing blended nicely
The one word character means crow. It is a very creative tattoo which totally blends the drawing into the character.
Nice little panda
This is a cute little panda tattoo.
Popular character among celebrities
The character means strength. It is very common and lots of celebrities have it inked as a tattoo . The strokes of the character combines well with the drawing.
Name in Chinese
Having one’s name in translated in Chinese inked is very common. In this tattoo, the red flowers make the characters appear very lively.
